Character names

Always tricky finding good character names. My favorite source is obscure public historical figures, like the top 21-50 aces of WWI. Tricky when you meet someone who shares a character name. I’ve really only had to change one for that reason.

Other media

I worked on a scenario for “Star Trek Online” called “Revenge of the Holodeck.” It’s fun to play around with other media some times. It’s hard to really give it your best as this is only for fun, no chance of getting paid. That and there are lots of constraints on your story. Playing with game “The Movies” was interesting too, but I found there were so many constraints it was just more frustrating than fun.

Dogfight 1930

The beauty of SF/Fantasy writing is you can make up scenarios for interesting military equipment that didn’t happen to get much use. E.g. the Boeing P-12. Wonderful aircraft, but unfortunatly (for it’s reputation) no big war broke out in 1930. They didn’t even send it against King Kong. We can fix that with some SF/Fantasy writing. Just need a good opponent.

Updating stories

Did a bit of work updating “Darras and Anne.” I have three short stories which fit together and I want to make that into a novel or novella. Looking back I think switching from first person to third person was a good move.

First Video: The Pumpkin question

The video is up now and so far well recieved. Hopefully I can think of other videos that will tie in with my writings. I’d like to try something that’s a bit more historical and less pure comedy. I like comedy, but the Tiberius stories are not all comedy. Production costs figure in here too. I’d love to do a stage play with Tiberius and I have a great idea for a levitation, but that requires actors, a budget and so on.

Poll number one – Sequels and Prequels

How much do you care about the sequels getting out in the correct order. The Narnia and Hornblower series were not published in cronological order. How much do you care? I’d like to publish in chronological order, but it might not always be practical.

A tribute to Mom

Ti’s Mother was about the last major piece of backstory I wrote. She was something of a blind spot for me until my mother passed away. It seemed natural then to make her an artist and name her after my mom. What?! you say? Ti’s mom is named Gretel, your mom was Marjorie. It’s not obvious, but they are the same name. They both mean ‘Pearl.’

Horse Archers vs Longbow

In making the New Model Legion should I have followed the Mongel Horse Archer Army? I thought about it but the terrain wouldn’t realistically support that many horses. I’m also not buying the idea that any horse bow is better than the best foot bows. The Longbow makes a lot of sense for the population of the Stewardship.

Classic Fairy Tales

Don’t fall into the trap of thinking that so and so’s rendition of some well known fairy story is the ‘definitive’ version and that everybody else is wrong. I especially hate it when someone finds a particularly gruesome or vulgar version of a classic story and thinks that that must be the ‘real’ version. Not so fast. Take the famous story of Guinevere and Lancelot. Le Morte d’Arthur is usually considered the definitive version of the story of King Arthur, but that is almost certainly a slander against the historical wife of Arthur. A little research shows that they stole the whole love triangle story from Tristan and Isolde. I’m constantly surprised by how many history lessons I’ve had were dead wrong. (anything you have likely heard in high school about the Presidency of Ulysses S. Grant, for example). Why should it be any different with the classic fairy story?
